Napoleon Crossing the Alps

This painting by Delaroche is a realistic interpretation of Napoleon's journey across the alps in May 1800. He was attempting to surprise Austrian troops who had seized Italian territory occupied by the French. The painting shows the First Consul mounted on a mule, and is in stark contrast to David's theatrical interpretation of the same event which was comissioned by Napoleon himself (click image). Bonaparte would not declare himself Emperor of the French (and France an Empire) unitl 1804.
